Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB)

About Ankara Esenboğa Airport

Ankara Esenboğa Airport (IATA code ESB) is the main airport of Ankara, the capital of Turkey. It lies north-east of the city, roughly 30 km from the centre, and handles both domestic flights across Turkey and international routes.

Because Ankara is the seat of government, the airport is used by many business travellers, diplomats and students as well as tourists heading to central Anatolia. It is also a convenient starting point for trips to Cappadocia and other inland regions. The terminal is compact compared with Istanbul's airports, which makes it relatively easy to navigate.

Getting to the city centre

There is no rail link to the airport, so most passengers use the road options:

• Airport shuttle buses — regular coaches connect the terminal with central Ankara and the intercity bus station (AŞTİ).
• Taxi — the fastest door-to-door option, waiting outside arrivals.
• Car rental — useful if you plan to explore central Anatolia.

Bus stops and timetables may change, so check the official airport website before travelling.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

• Check your airline's recommended check-in time and allow extra time for security and passport control.
• Look at the terminal shown on your ticket or booking confirmation and confirm it on the airport's departure boards.
• Baggage allowance depends on your fare, so check what is included with the airline before you fly.
• Ankara winters can be snowy and foggy, so in the cold season keep an eye on your flight status on the day of travel.
