Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

About Berlin Brandenburg Airport

Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (IATA code BER) is the international airport of Germany's capital. It opened in October 2020 and replaced the city's older airports, Tegel and Schönefeld. It is located south-east of Berlin, just outside the city limits in the state of Brandenburg.

BER handles all of Berlin's scheduled passenger flights, from short European hops to long-haul routes. Most flights use the main Terminal 1, which is designed around a central hall with piers for different gate areas. The airport has its own railway station underneath the terminal, making it one of the better-connected airports in Germany.

Getting to the city centre

Rail is the easiest way into Berlin:

• FEX airport express — the regional express runs to Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main station) and other central stops.
• Regional trains and S-Bahn — further rail lines connect the airport with many parts of the city.
• Buses — connect BER with the U-Bahn network and nearby areas.
• Taxi — available outside the terminal.

The airport lies in a different public transport fare zone than central Berlin, so check ticket rules on the official airport website.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

• Use online check-in where available and keep your boarding pass on your phone or printed.
• Confirm the terminal on your ticket shortly before departure, as airlines occasionally change terminals.
• Keep liquids, chargers and documents easy to reach to speed up the security check.
• If your ticket says "Berlin Schönefeld" or "Tegel", it is outdated information — all flights now use BER.
