Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

About Delhi Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IATA code DEL) is the main airport of Delhi and the National Capital Region of India, and one of the busiest airports in Asia. It is located in the south-west of the city, roughly 15 km from central New Delhi, and is named after India's former prime minister Indira Gandhi.

The airport is a major hub for Air India and IndiGo and has several passenger terminals for domestic and international flights. Delhi is a natural starting point for trips to Agra and the Taj Mahal, Jaipur and the rest of northern India, so many travellers combine international and domestic flights here.

Getting to the city centre

Main transfer options:

• Airport Express metro line — a dedicated metro line links the airport with New Delhi railway station area and connects to the wider Delhi Metro network.
• Prepaid and app-based taxis — book at official counters or through ride-hailing apps.
• Buses — public and airport buses serve various parts of the city.

Metro access differs by terminal, and traffic in Delhi can be unpredictable. Check current options on the official airport website before travelling.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

• Use online check-in where available and keep your boarding pass on your phone or printed.
• Confirm the terminal on your ticket shortly before departure, as airlines occasionally change terminals.
• Keep liquids, chargers and documents easy to reach to speed up the security check.
• Domestic and international flights may use different terminals, so check both on your booking if you have an onward flight within India.
