About Heydar Aliyev Airport

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (IATA code GYD) is the main international gateway of Azerbaijan. It serves Baku, the country's capital, and lies roughly 20 km northeast of the city centre on the Absheron Peninsula.

The airport is the home base of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) and handles most of the country's international traffic. Its modern passenger terminal, opened in the 2010s, is known for its distinctive wooden "cocoon" interior design. For most travellers from Azerbaijan, a trip abroad starts right here.

Getting to the city centre

The most popular ways to get between the airport and central Baku are:

  • Express airport bus — a dedicated bus service links the terminal with the city centre and is the budget-friendly option.
  • Taxi — licensed taxis wait outside arrivals; ride-hailing apps also work in Baku.
  • Hotel transfer — many hotels can arrange a pick-up if you ask in advance.

Bus routes, payment methods and fares can change, so check the official airport information before your trip. Our guide from the airport to the city centre has general advice on choosing a transfer.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

  • Check your airline's recommended check-in time and allow extra time for security and passport control.
  • Look at the terminal shown on your ticket or booking confirmation and confirm it on the airport's departure boards.
  • Baggage allowance depends on your fare, so check what is included with the airline before you fly.
  • Traffic on the roads into Baku can be heavy at rush hour, so leave the city with time to spare.
